Mini Field Trips

We've been "in session" now for about 60 days. I realized last week we had only had one official "field trip" (to a local free zoo at the beginning of the year). I thought it would be nice to have an official outing again, but with money even tighter than usual thanks to the upcoming holidays (not to mention the yucky wet weather), I wasn't quite sure what to do.

When I saw in our pre-made lesson plans that this week's science topic was exercise (under the larger umbrella of the human body), the perfect mini field trip hit me almost instantly. Curves!

I've been working out at Curves now for 3 years, and I love it. After I got the okay to bring my daughter in for a work-out, she was very excited! I brought her in with my in the evening, and while I did my work-out, the circuit-trainer on duty took her around, showed her how to do the machines and explained what muscles they worked. (Of course, I realized halfway there that I had left my camera at home, so I was unable to get a picture of her on the machines). She's an awfully tall 7 year old, though she was still too small to work some of the machines effectively. After she went around and tried all of the machines, we bought a water to share and stretched together as I explained why stretching was an important part of working out.

It only took about 20 minutes, it was free, and she loved it! Proof positive that field trips don't have to be expensive or drawn out to be fun!

When Katie isn't busy working out with the girls, she can be found blogging at Just Another Catholic Mom.
